On Li Dongyuan’s theory of "presenting the scenes of spring and summer"
As the representative figure of the Yi Shui school
Li Dongyuan is famous for his theory of fortifying spleen and stomach. Li repeatedly mentioned the rule of "presenting the scenes of spring and summer (
xíng chūn xià zhī lìng
)" in his works. In order to explore the meaning
medication characteristics and clinical significance of this theory
this paper collects and analyzes the relevant sentences and finally comes to the conclusion that Li’s theory responds to the rise of grain qi and gallbladder qi and the growth of yang qi in the human body
which is the basis of human physiological activities. Therefore
he attached importance to supplementing qi and ascending yang in the treatment. In terms of medication
he focused on the use of acrid and sweet herbs with a dispersing effect. Li applied the method of supplementing qi and ascending yang to treat sinking diseases such as metrorrhagia and diarrhea
as well as disorders related to upper part of human body such as headache and eye diseases
which has an important impact on physicians of later generations.
